Holistic Healing Is Finding Its Place With Proper 'Application'

The term holistic healing has become popular lately, with people increasingly trying to find alternative methods of treatment deemed natural. However, some people might not know what holistic healing really means and what types of treatments it entails. More importantly, people might not know what holistic applications are considered safest and most effective. One form of holistic healing, Traditional Chinese Medicine, (TCM), has become increasingly popular. Thousands of years old, Traditional Chinese Medicine refers to a variety of treatments, including:

  • » Acupuncture
  • » Herbal medicine
  • » Cupping
  • » Massage

Traditional Chinese Medicine, although a widespread practice in the United States now, has no correlation with traditional Western medicine. It involves a completely different philosophy concerning health and healing.

What Does Holistic Healing Mean?

The term “holistic” means looking at a system as a whole, as something that is interconnected instead of separate. So holistic healing means trying to heal the body by looking at it as a whole system, and trying to restore the proper balance and function of the body. Moreover, while the physical body is one part of the system, holistic healing also takes into account the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of the subject. The goal is to restore optimal balance to an individual’s life so that one can live a life with wellness in all aspects.

Holistic Healing Treatments

How does someone go about receiving holistic healing treatments? Generally an individual will visit a holistic health practitioner and they could be recommended a variety of things to help with their problems, such as a diet or exercise regime, spiritual therapy, or even relationship counseling.

The practitioner might also recommend alternative therapies that have been proven to help patients in the past, such as visiting a chiropractor or acupuncture. Traditional Chinese Medicine has become a popular form of holistic treatment, since the entire basis of the practice is based on looking at the body as a whole. Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners view the body’s health less about bodily functions and more about healing the energy of the body, known as the qi. By restoring the natural flow of the body, it will also restore the body’s health.

The most popular form of Traditional Chinese Medicine is acupuncture, which involves needling specific areas of the body to correct the flow of energy. But other forms are available also, and sometimes used in conjunction with each other. This includes herbal medicine, which includes prescribing a patient a combination of herbs, specifically combined to treat their specific ailment. Another treatment called Cupping Therapy has also reached public awareness, when celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow have appeared at publicity events with the distinctive cupping marks on her back. Cupping involves creating suction on a person’s back or shoulder with cups to promote blood flow and has been used to treat respiratory problems and cancer.

Be Cautious

Besides established forms of holistic healing such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are other forms of questionable healing out there. Many people will seek to make a quick buck hawking their holistic healing services, but will not have any relevant training or knowledge. Always seek out a holistic health practitioner who is established, or has verifiable credentials. Acupuncturists who are legitimate usually have three to four years of training at an accredited program. Other alternative methods of treatment such as Crystal Healing are not backed with the thousands years of study and practice like Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Find What Works For You

And, finally, everyone is different, with various genetics and responses to different treatments. Holistic healing, with the proper application, can benefit anyone’s life, no matter what one’s background is. But the key is finding what treatments you have the best response to, and feel the most comfortable being treated with. However, all people should keep in mind that a healthy life is about achieving optimal balance physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
